British reggae band UB40 from Birmingham, England, was founded in 1978. The band's current line-up comprises James (Jimmy) Brown (drums), Ali Campbell (guitar, lead vocals), Robin Campbell (lead guitar, vocals), Earl Falconer (bass guitar, vocals), Norman Hassan (percussion, trombone, vocals), Brian Travers (saxophone, Lyricon, wind synth), Mickey Virtue (keyboards) and Astro (toasting vocals, percussion, trumpet). They met each other during their education at college. In the beginning, they performed at local pubs. Exactly there, they were noticed by the American rock musician Chrissie Hynde. She invited them to perform as a support act to her band called The Pretenders. Later, they collaborated with Pato Banton, Madness, Bitty McLean, Maxi Priest, Robert Palmer, Hunterz, Japanese artist Mikidozan, French artist Nuttea and Lady Saw. They achieved mainstream success with their multi-platinum album, Labour of Love, which spawned the hits, "Many Rivers to Cross" and "Red, Red Wine".
