Thelonious Sphere Monk, better known just as Thelonious Monk was born on October 10, 1917Rocky Mount, North Carolina, U.S. and died on February 17, 1982 in Englewood, New Jersey, U.S. He was an American jazz pianist and composer, one of the giants of American music. His playing style was absolutely unique. He is also considered as a founder of bebop. He featured on the Time magazine cover, being one of few jazz musicians along with Louis Armstrong, Dave Brubeck, Duke Ellington, and Wynton Marsalis. Besides his solo career, he played with Miles Davis, Clark Terry, Gigi Gryce, Sonny Rollins, and Coleman Hawkins. Monk was posthumously awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and Pulitzer Prize Special Citation.
