American alternative rock, pop rock and college rock band R.E.M. from Athens, Georgia, was formed in 1980. The band comprises Michael Stipe, Peter Buck and Mike Mills. They quickly gained popularity in the early 1980s with their breakthrough debut hit single, "Radio Free Europe", which was released through the independent record label Hib-Tone. In the early 1990s, they released their most commercially successful album, Automatic for the People, which has been certified platinum four times in the US, seven times in Canada and six times in the UK. It also yielded the hits such as "Drive", "Man on the Moon", "The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite", "Everybody Hurts", "Nightswimming" and "Find the River".
