Operation Ivy

Operation Ivy was an American ska punk band formed in Albany, California, the United States in 1987. The band consisted of Jesse Michaels (vocals, frontman), Tim Armstrong (vocals, guitar), Matt Freeman (bass, backing vocals) and Dave Mello (drums, backing vocals). The band broke up in 1989 but despite such short active period, it has become very influential. The band also became a springboard for careers of Tim Armstrong and Matt Freeman who are now members of the band Rancid. The band’s name comes from the series of nuclear tests in the US. The band quickly rose to fame as they were playing revolutionary fusion of Jamaican ska and punk rock. In a year, the band was very popular at the East Bay. The band released only one studio album Energy. During the band’s active period, only several thousand copies were sold, but after its re-issue in 9 years, it got the cult status.
