English electronica and alternative dance songwriter, record producer and singer M.I.A. (birth name Mathangi "Maya" Arulpragasam) was born on 18 July 1975, in Hounslow, London, England. She quickly gained popularity in 2005 with her breakthrough debut album, Arular, which spawned four singles such as "Sunshowers", "Galang", "Bucky Done Gun" and "Galang '05".
