Lauryn Hill

American hip hop, soul, R&B and reggae singer-songwriter, record producer and actress Lauryn Hill was born on May 25, 1975, in South Orange, New Jersey, United States. As a child, she listened to her parents' Motown 1960s soul records. Music was a central part of the Hill home. Her father sang at weddings, her mother played the piano, and Lauryn's older brother Melaney played the saxophone, guitar, drums, harmonica, violin, and piano. In 1988 13-year old she appeared as an Amateur Night contestant on It's Showtime at the Apollo. She sang her own version of Smokey Robinson's song "Who's Lovin' You?". She quickly gained popularity in 1998 with her best selling album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, which swept the Grammy Awards in 1999, being nominated for 10 and winning five, including Album of the Year.
