Joan Manuel Serrat i Teresa is a Spanish singer-songwriter born on December 27, 1943 in Barcelona, Spain. He is one of the most popular and important singers in both Spanish and Catalan languages. He debuted on the stage in 1967 and quickly became one of the most popular artists in the genre of Nova cançó movement in Catalonia. His popularity grew up beyond his native Barcelona and he was sent to represent Spain at the Eurovision contest. He intended to sing in Catalan language and was banned by the Franc regime. In 1974, he had to leave his country for Mexico where he stayed till Franco’s death in 1975. Spanish government awarded him for the outstanding contribution to the Hispanic culture.
