American soul and R&B singer-songwriter Jill Scott was born on April 4, 1972, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, U.S. She began her music career as a spoken word artist. During this time, she caught the attention of Amir "QuestLove" Thompson from The Roots. She quickly joined the band. In 1999, she signed to Hidden Beach Recordings. And in 2000, she released her debut album, Who Is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds Vol. 1, which was nominated for Best R&B Album at the Grammy Awards, in 2001.
