Del Shannon

Del Shannon, birth name Charles Weedon Westover, was an American rock and roll singer-songwriter born on December 30, 1934Grand Rapids, Michigan, United States and died on February 8, 1990 Santa Clarita, California, US. During his youth, he learnt how to play ukulele and guitar and was listening to country music – Hank Williams, Hank Snow, and Lefty Frizzell. After coming from the army service, Westover worked as a truck driver, carpet seller and had a part time job in a band as rhythm guitarist. When the band’s leader was fired, Westover replaced him and took a moniker Charlie Johnson. Later, he changed it for Del Shannon. The first hit was “Runaway”. The song gained much popularity and reached the top spot of the charts in the U.S. and the UK. The last Del Shannon’s album is “Rock On” (1990).
