American jazz pianist, bandleader, and composer Count Basie (August 21, 1904 – April 26, 1984; birth name William James Basie) was born in Red Bank, New Jersey, U.S. In the early 1920s, he moved to Harlem. After his arrival, he began to collaborate with Sonny Greer (drummer of the Duke Ellington’s band). Later, he met various Harlem artists such as Willie “the Lion” Smith and James P. Johnson. During this time, Basie worked with many bands including Katie Krippen and Her Kiddies, Hippity Hop and others. He was also well known for his professional collaboration with the American pop and jazz singer Tony Bennett.
