Bettye LaVette, birth name Betty Haskins, is an American soul singer-songwriter born on January 29, 1946 in Muskegon, Michigan, the United States. She began her recording career at the age of 16. The debut single “My Man – He is a Lovin’ Man” was a top ten hit on the R&B chart. During many years she could not get the real “breakthrough” until her 2005 album “I’ve Got my Own Hell to Raise”. The album was praised by critics and many included it in their “best of 2005” lists. The album composes of the covers of songs written by other female artists like Dolly Parton, Sinead O’Connor, Fiona Apple and many others.
