American power pop and rock singer-songwriter Ben Folds (birth name Benjamin Scott Folds) was born on September 12, 1966 , in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, U.S. He is also the former frontman of the an alternative rock band Ben Folds Five. He became attached to a piano when his father brought one home when he was 9. During this time, he listened to songs by Elton John and Billy Joel on AM radio, and learned them by ear. During his years at R.J. Reynolds High School in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, he played in several bands as the pianist, bassist or drummer. He rose to famed as a solo singer with his debut album, Rockin' the Suburbs (2001), which yielded several singles such as "The Luckiest", "Rockin' the Suburbs" and "Still Fighting It".
